Zimmermann nació en Buenos Aires en 1950. Cursó estudios
de cine en el Centro Experimental del Instituto Nacional de Cinematografía
de ésta ciudad y más tarde trabajó como fotógrafo
de cine en películas argentinas y extranjeras como: Quebracho,
La Raulito, Camila, Miss Mary y otras. Vivió en Roma tres años,
en donde trabajó como fotógrafo free-lance. En esos años
fue invitado por Robert Delpire a Paris, a exponer su trabajo en una
muestra junto a H. Cartier Bresson, Robert Doisneau, Robert Frank y
Joseph Koudelka.
Desde 1989 trabaja en la realización de libros fotográficos,
entre los que se cuentan: "Patagonia, un lugar en el viento",
"Río de la Plata, río de los sueños";
"Norte Argentino, la tierra y la sangre"; "Argentina,
naturaleza para el futuro" y "Siderca-40 años".
En 1995 ha recibido el Premio Pirámide de Oro al Mejor Trabajo
Fotográfico y en 1996 el Primer Premio al Mejor Libro de Arte
Argentino, otorgado por la Feria del Libro de Buenos Aires. Sus fotografías
han sido adquiridas por Manuel Alvarez Bravo para la colección
de la Fundación Televisa de México, por John Szarkowski
para la colección Paine Webber Group de New York, por el Bank
of America para su colección de arte, por la Biblioteca Nacional
de Paris y por numerosos coleccionistas privados. Ha realizado más
de treinta muestras en Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Roma, Paris y Tokyo.
Desde 1999, su obra pasó a formar parte del patrimonio del Museo
Nacional de Bellas Artes y del Museo de Arte Moderno de la ciudad de
Buenos Aires. Actualmente está a punto de publicar su sexto libro:
"Patagonia, el último confín de la naturaleza"
con textos de Tomás Eloy Martínez y trabaja en tres libros:
"Plantas autóctonas", "Desnudos Sudamericanos"
y "Un perro en el Paraíso". También prepara
una muestra curada por el gran maestro japonés Eikoh Hosoe que
se realizará en la Shadai Gallery de Tokio, en Noviembre de 2004.
La Folio Gallery de Alberta, Canadá, está realizando un
libro monográfico sobre su obra llamado: "Bajo las Estrellas".

Biography:
Marcos Zimmermann
was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1950. He studied cinema there
at the National Institute of Cinematography's Experimental Centre. Since
1973 he was the stills photographer in the Argentine and foreign films:
Quebracho, La Raulito, Sra. de Nadie, Camila, Les longs manteaux and
many others.
In 1979 he moved to Rome where he worked freelance. He participated
in Venezia'79-La Fotografia, and held two exhibitions in Rome. Two years
later he participated in the Rencontres Internationales d'Arles and
was invited by Robert Delpire to exhibit his work in Paris, in a show
together with H. Cartier-Bresson, Robert Doisneau, Robert Frank and
Joseph Koudelka, at the Delpire-Nouvelle Observateur Gallery.
In 1982 he returned to Buenos Aires and set up a studio. Since 1988
he has worked on books of photography. These include "Patagonia,
a Place in the Wind"; "Siderca-40 Years"; "Rio de
la Plata, River of Dreams"; and "Northern Argentina Land and
Kin". One of these books, "Rio de la Plata, River of Dreams",
won the "Premio Pirámide de Oro 1995" (1995 Golden
Pyramid Prize) for the Best Photographic Work of the Year, as well as
the "Fundación El Libro's 1996 Prize" for Best Argentine
Art Book.
His photographs have been exhibited in many places and have been acquired
by Manuel Alvarez Bravo for the Televisa Foundation A.C. in Mexico;
by John Szarkowski for the Paine Webber Group Photographic Collection
in New York; by the Pan American Cultural Exchange Foundation for the
Photographic Collection of the Houston Museum of Fine Arts (selected
by Anne Tucker); by the Antorchas Foundation in Buenos Aires; by the
Bank of America Collection and by private collectionists in USA, Japan,
Italy, France, Switzerland, Chile and Argentina.
In the last years he has held one man exhibitions at the Verso Photo
Gallery in Tokyo; at the Fotogalería of the Teatro San Martín
in Buenos Aires and at the Centro di Promozione Argentino in Milano.
He has also participated in the exhibition Myths, Dreams and Realities
held at the Houston Center for Photography, at the International Center
of Photography of New York, and at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes
in Buenos Aires. He has also participated in an exhibition at Photoespaña
2001, and has held two one man exhibitions during 2002: one in the Centro
Cultural Ricardo Rojas of Buenos Aires, and another in Manphis, U.S.A.
His photographs are part of the Collection of the Museum of Modern Art
and of the Collection of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, both in
Buenos Aires.
He has recently published his fifth book "Argentina, Nature for
the Future" together with a one man exhibition at the Centro Cultural
Recoleta in Buenos Aires. At present he is working in his sixth book
"Patagonia, the utermost part of the world" with texts of
Tomás Eloy Martínez, and in another one called Naked Southamericans.
He is preparing an exhibition in the Shadai gallery in Tokyo for November
2004. The Folio Gallery of Alberta, Canada is making a book with his
work called: "Under the stars".
